About Grønn Framtid VegFest (Tromsø & Bergen)

Grønn Framtid (Green Future) runs two of Norway's most geographically distinctive vegan festivals: Tromsø VegFest inside the Arctic Circle and Bergen VegFest on the rain-lashed west coast. The charity's mission is to build a more just food system for humans, animals, and the planet, and the festivals are its most public expression, a chance for Norwegians outside Oslo to taste plant-based cooking in settings that feel distinctly regional.

Tromsø VegFest launched in 2019 as Nord-Norge's first vegetarian festival and sold out ("fullt hus") from its opening edition. It's a landmark event for Northern Norway, where plant-based eating is still a relatively new cultural proposition. Bergen VegFest followed in 2024, hosted at Det Akademiske Kvarter (Olav Kyrres gate 49), the historic student cultural house in the city centre. Bergen's edition has grown fast, filling the Kvarter's multi-room layout with food stalls, lecture spaces, and kids' programming across a single intense day.

Both festivals share a core formula. Expect falafel, veggie burgers, vegan waffles, African stews, vegan kebab, and Indian curries from rotating vendors, plus tasting stalls from Norwegian plant-based producers. Programming centres on free cooking classes where visitors learn to prepare vegetarian dishes at home, alongside talks covering the health and environmental arguments for plant-based eating and the ethical case around animal welfare. Family-friendly entertainment runs through the day, which makes either festival a realistic outing with kids.

The catch for 2026: both dates are still unannounced as of late March. Grønn Framtid historically confirms the Tromsø edition for late summer or early autumn and Bergen for autumn. Follow @gronnframtid on Instagram for announcements, or watch vegfest.no. Tickets are typically priced at a modest day-pass level, and volunteers receive free admission plus meals, a practical route in for anyone curious about the Nordic vegan scene. Both cities reward festival visitors with separate reasons to stay: Tromsø's Northern Lights season and Bergen's Bryggen wharf, Fløyen funicular, and seafood-alternative restaurants around the harbour.
