About Rock for Animal Rights Festival
Locals call it "ein kleines bisschen Wacken" — a little slice of Wacken — and that captures the spirit of Rock for Animal Rights (RFAR) well. Held on the grounds of the Tierrechtszentrum Offenwarden, an active animal sanctuary between Bremen and Bremerhaven, the festival is a rare example of a mid-sized German open-air where the music, the catering, and the underlying ethics are aligned from the first beat to the last.
Now entering its 12th edition in 2026, RFAR was founded to raise funds and visibility for Tierrechtsbund Aktiv e.V., the non-profit that runs the sanctuary. The entire festival is volunteer-run, and 100% of proceeds go back to the animals — a model that has built unusually loyal audiences across the German rock and hardcore scenes. Past lineups have leaned into stoner rock, punk, metalcore, and singer-songwriter sets; 2026 confirmed acts include Stonerunner, Jaded Heart, G.L.A.S.S., Ultraviolett, July15th, DerHB, The Fright, OX, The Pinpricks, Crusade of Bards, Give me Rain, Joch, and Dream Ocean, with more to be announced.
The 2026 edition runs Thursday 11 June to Sunday 14 June, with main performances clustered on Friday and Saturday nights. Daily hours stretch from 17:00 to 02:00. All food and beverages on site are vegan — no exceptions, no "alternative" tent. Expect hearty festival fare: grilled seitan sausages, burgers, curries, cake, and local craft beer. Camping, tents, and parking are free with a festival ticket, which is the soul of the RFAR experience: most attendees pitch up on Thursday and stay through Sunday morning.
The site is reachable by car from the A27 (Bremen–Bremerhaven) in about 40 minutes, by regional train to Sandstedt with a short shuttle, or by bike for the committed. This is an adult-oriented festival — not explicitly forbidden for kids, but the late-night metal focus and camping format make it better suited to over-16s. Tickets sell through Eventbrite; refunds are available up to seven days before the event.
