About Vegan Festival Freiburg

The Vegan Festival Freiburg is the small-but-earnest annual project of Vegan Freiburg e.V., a volunteer association founded by around ten locals who organized the city's first vegan festival in 2023. After a pause, the association has publicly committed to relaunching the festival in 2026, once again on the Platz der Alten Synagoge — the large open plaza in front of the university library that functions as Freiburg's informal civic stage.

Past editions have taken the form of a single-day open-air, typically running from midday to late evening with live music, short talks on ethics and climate, cooking demonstrations, and around 15 regional vendor stalls serving food and sustainable goods. Expect Baden-specific vegan cuisine — Flammkuchen, Schwarzwald-style cakes, local wine, seasonal produce — alongside street-food classics and ice cream. The tone is community-first rather than commercial: this is a grassroots event organized by people who know each other, not a ticketed convention.

As of April 2026, the official date has not been formally announced. Organizers have signaled a summer 2026 window but have not published confirmed dates on the website or Instagram at time of writing. Visitors should monitor @veganfestivalfreiburg on Instagram or veganfreiburg.org for updates, which tend to land roughly six to eight weeks before the event.

What makes this festival worth the detour — even at a smaller scale than Hamburg or Berlin — is the context. Freiburg sits at the edge of the Black Forest and has long been one of Germany's greenest cities, with an unusually strong cycling, solar, and sustainability culture. The festival draws from that DNA: expect fewer flashy brands, more neighborhood energy, and meaningful conversations with the people actually cooking your food. Previous editions have concluded with an afterparty across three nearby venues featuring electronic DJs, a tradition the 2026 revival is expected to continue.

Platz der Alten Synagoge is two minutes on foot from Freiburg Hauptbahnhof and fully step-free, making it one of the most accessible festival locations in the region.
